Should You Maintain Your Own WordPress Site?

Think you're ready to manage your WordPress site solo? Before you dive in, run through this quick self-check. From backups to plugin updates, staging servers to error recovery. See if you're truly set up to keep your site running smoothly without support.
Wordpress maintenance

WordPress allows you to run a professional website without writing a single line of code. But just because you can doesn’t always mean you should.

Keeping a WordPress site healthy requires more than just updating a blog post or swapping out a photo. If you’re thinking about managing your site yourself, here’s a quick self-assessment to see if you’re ready or if it might be time to call in support.

🔧 The WordPress Maintenance Questionnaire

Ask yourself honestly:

1. Can you make a backup of your site?

  • Do you know how to manually or automatically back up your site and database?
  • Are you using a backup plugin, or does your host provide regular backups?
  • Do you know where your backups are stored?

✅ Yes, I regularly back up my site and know how to access them.
⚠️ Sort of. I think my host might be backing it up.
❌ No, I’ve never made a backup.

2. Can you restore from a backup if something goes wrong?

  • Have you ever practiced restoring a site?
  • Would you know what to do if your site was hacked or offline?

✅ Yes, I’ve restored my site before, or feel confident I could.
⚠️ Maybe. With help or tutorials.
❌ No idea. I didn’t even know restoring was a thing.

3. Do you know how to set up and use a staging site?

  • Do you test plugin or theme updates somewhere before applying them live?
  • Can you push staging changes to live confidently?

✅ Yes, I use a staging site to test all changes.
⚠️ I’ve heard of staging, but I don’t use one.
❌ No, I only work directly on the live site.

4. Do you keep your WordPress, themes, and plugins updated?

  • How often do you log in to check?
  • Do you understand how to review changelogs or test updates safely?

✅ Yes, I update regularly and safely.
⚠️ Sometimes, I forget or get nervous about breaking things.
❌ I haven’t updated in months. Everything still works though…

5. Do you know how to identify and fix common issues?

  • Can you recognize plugin conflicts or PHP errors?
  • Do you understand how caching works?
  • Do you know what to do if your site gets slow, shows a white screen, or displays errors?

✅ I know how to troubleshoot most issues or find clear solutions.
⚠️ I Google and cross my fingers.
❌ I panic and hope it fixes itself.

6. Are you comfortable using an FTP client or file manager?

  • Can you access wp-config.php or .htaccess if needed?
  • Are you able to disable a plugin manually if the site is down?

✅ Yes, I’ve used FTP and know my way around the file system.
⚠️ Maybe. I’ve done it once, but not recently.
❌ I don’t know what FTP is.

7. Do you monitor site uptime, security, and performance?

  • Are you using tools like Wordfence, Uptime Robot, or GTmetrix?
  • Do you get alerts if something goes wrong?

✅ Yes, I have tools set up and check regularly.
⚠️ Sort of. I get alerts but don’t always act on them.
❌ No, I only notice problems when someone tells me.

What Your Score Means:

  • Mostly ✅: You’re likely capable of managing your site solo, but it’s still smart to have a fallback expert for bigger problems or audits.
  • Mostly ⚠️: You’re doing OK, but you’re one bad plugin update away from stress. Consider a care plan or support partner.
  • Mostly ❌: No shame. You’re great at your business, not necessarily at WordPress. Let someone else keep your site secure and running smoothly.

Final Thought:

Your website is a critical business tool, not just a hobby. If you don’t have time to learn and maintain the above, you probably don’t have time to recover from something breaking.
