Ever wondered which version of your logo you should send to the printer, your web developer, or your social media manager? You’re not alone. File formats can get confusing fast, but they don’t have to be.
At Giant, we equip our clients with the right files for every situation, but we also want you to feel confident knowing what each one is for. Here’s a cheat sheet you can use.
The Who, What, Where, and Why of File Types
Let’s break it down.
WHO Needs It
- Designer: Needs fully editable files to make design changes.
- Developer: Wants optimized files that load quickly online.
- Vendor: Needs print-ready files with the correct specs.
- Client (You): Needs clean, easy-to-use versions for everyday stuff like documents and social media.
WHAT It Is
Each file type serves a different purpose:
- Editable: Usually
.AI,.EPS, or.PDF(vector). These are source files. Only a designer will need these. - Scalable: SVG or high-res PDF. Great for web, swag, signage, or anything that might need to be resized.
- Transparent: PNG files. Use these when you want your logo without a white background.
- Universal: JPEG files. Easy to use, but not scalable or transparent.
WHERE It’s Used
- Print: Use vector files or high-res PDFs. These are what your printer or vendor will ask for when making business cards, swag, brochures, or event signage.
- Web: Stick to optimized PNGs, SVGs, or JPEGs for your website, email marketing, landing pages, and social media.
WHY It Matters
Using the correct file type means:
- Faster load times online
- Crisper results in print
- No weird background boxes
- No last-minute fire drills before a big deadline
Pro Tip: Keep a Logo Folder
Create a folder with subfolders for:
- Web
- Social Media
- Originals (Editable)
Label your files clearly, and thank yourself later.
